Iaido Competition 2025

I had a wonderful time capturing the 4th Annual Ottawa Iaido Taikai competition this July. Iaido, the art of Japanese swordsmanship, is a beautiful and disciplined form of performance rooted in centuries of tradition. It was inspiring to witness such grace, precision, and focus from every participant.

The 4th Annual Ottawa Iaido Taikai brings together competitors and judges from Ontario, Quebec, and upstate New York for a weekend of friendly yet intense Iaido competition. This year, the focus is on showcasing the lessons and philosophies of traditional Iaido schools, emphasizing the martial spirit in every performance.

Being part of this event not only allowed me to document powerful moments but also deepened my appreciation for this amazing aspect of Japanese culture. Thanks Tokushikai 篤志会 for this splendid opportunity!

Omiya Mairi Session

Recently, I had the honour of photographing a very special Omiya Mairi (お宮参り) session — a traditional Japanese custom to celebrate a baby’s first milestone. Baby wasn’t in the best mood that day (as babies sometimes are!), but with patience and gentle moments, we were able to capture some truly beautiful photos.

Despite the challenges, the session turned out to be a success. There’s something so meaningful about preserving these fleeting moments — the tiny hands, sleepy expressions, and quiet connection between parent and child.

After the shoot, I received an incredibly kind review from the family, and it truly made my day. Knowing that my work brought joy and lasting memories to someone’s life is the most rewarding part of what I do.

These sessions remind me that every photo has a story — sometimes imperfect, sometimes spontaneous — but always filled with love.

Here is the review I received : “We had our first professional family photo session with Kyoko for our daughter’s Omiya Mairi celebration, and it was such a wonderful experience from start to finish.

Kyoko was incredibly well-prepared when we arrived. She had already set up a beautiful background with umbrellas and props, and even had a baby bouncer ready. All I had to do was place my baby on the seat, and she gently dressed her in the traditional kimono, bib, and hat. When my daughter started to cry from being tired, Kyoko was patient, calm, and adaptable. She suggested letting the baby sleep in my arms and seamlessly moved on to taking photos of my husband and son.

She was especially great with our two-year-old, using toys and playful cues to keep him focused and engaged. Her posing guidance was clear and professional, and she handled the unpredictability of young children with such ease and warmth.

What amazed me most was how quickly we received the photos—about 80 beautifully proofed images just two days later! I wasn’t expecting such a fast turnaround, and the quality exceeded all expectations. She captured not only the posed shots, but also candid moments, like me dressing my baby and my toddler watching curiously. This made the album feel even more personal and authentic.

Kyoko communicated everything clearly via email and gave us all the information we needed to feel prepared. I’ve already ordered prints and an album, and I can’t wait to display them at home.

This was more than just a photo shoot. It was a meaningful cultural experience for us, and I’m so glad we were able to celebrate Omiya Mairi in Ottawa thanks to Kyoko. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled, thoughtful, and family-friendly photographer.”

I greatly appreciate these kind words. They are very encouraging and meaningful to me.

Natsu Matsuri 2025

One of highlight of my summer was volunteering at Natsu Matsuri, the summer festival operated by the Ottawa Japanese Community Association. I was part of the kimono dressing team, helping with fundraising through cultural engagement. It was an amazing success! Despite the heat and intense sun, visitors were enthusiastic and excited to try on beautiful kimono and learn more about Japanese traditions. Seeing everyone’s smiles and hearing their kind words made the long day incredibly fulfilling.

These experiences reminded me how meaningful it is to stay connected — to the society, to culture, and to one another. I’m so grateful for these moments and for everyone who made them special.

Simple Miracles 2025 Summer

I had an amazing time visiting Jambican Studio Gardens for a photo shoot, capturing the vibrant beauty of fresh vegetables. Though the strong sun and heat left me exhausted, the farmers carried on with tireless energy. Their resilience and dedication truly impressed me.

This year, the weather has not been favourable, so the produce has been a bit slower to grow — but I’m looking forward to enjoying amazing vegetables from now through November.

Iaido seminar in June 篤志会

Last summer, I had the privilege of capturing my first honourable moment by photographing the Iaido competition. This time, I was invited to document their seminar, where members engaged in learning new techniques and explore into the philosophy, values, and mission of the dojo. For more information about Tokushikai Canada please check here.

Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial art that utilizes swords as a means of training the body and mind in the attainment of stillness and balance. The refined movements, calmness, and respect embodied in Iaido evoke a profound sense of Japanese beauty, which is deeply ingrained in my cultural heritage.

I am thankful for this awesome experience ! Looking forward to the next event in June and July !
